Assess endometrial thickness based on menopausal status and clinical context.

Reference Information

Postmenopausal Endometrium

  • Asymptomatic: A thickness of <5 mm is generally accepted as normal. Some literature suggests up to 8mm may be normal in certain asymptomatic populations, but <5mm is a widely used cutoff to exclude significant pathology.
  • With Bleeding: A thickness of >4 mm is considered abnormal and warrants further investigation (e.g., biopsy) to rule out malignancy.

Premenopausal Endometrium

  • Menstrual Phase (Days 1-4): 2-4 mm
  • Proliferative Phase (Days 5-11): 5-11 mm
  • Secretory Phase (Days 12-28): 7-16 mm
